| Penned by Hernan Braña, this is a virtuostic exercise in rhythm, high staccati and purely floated, flute-like high notes. It subtly demonstrates Hernan's intuitive knowledge of Yma's voice and its capabilities. Her singing is perfect; pin-pointed and without one note out of place. It is obvious from this recording that by 1954, Yma was becoming more and more dependent on using a prefacing "n" or "nyah!" for high coloratura flights to ensure that her voice was securely placed in the head register. Although short (1:47) this song has all sorts of vocal effects: unusual rhythmic accentuations, cries, growls, grunts, glissandi, and high staccati. One passage is exceptional. Yma rises by a slow glissando to a sustained high D (supported by the driving force of the band) which she then leaves with a triumphant, rhythmical flip up to high F. She repeats this passage to bring the piece to a brilliant close. One of the best bands on the record. |
