The whisper voice
I just started taking voice lessons and my teacher told me about a high range called the whisper voice. Everyone raves that Mariah Carey has a seven octave voice. She may be talented but her voice does not posses the clarity, beauty and uniqueness that Yma Sumac's does.

Anyway, just a comment from a music loving teenager!!!

YMA SUMAC IS AMAZING!!!

The whisper voice
I think Mariah Carey must be counting the black-keys when she says she has a seven octave voice range! That would make it about four octaves which is closer to what it sounds like! Her voice is nice and I own one or two of her albums, but I doubt the range is that great. But I'm glad that you enjoy Yma Sumac. I was sixteen when I first bought one of her albums - in the mid-1960s.

Mariah?
Mariah Carey does not come close. I personally do not like Mariah's voice at all, she (to me) has very little control . Granted I know that my froggy contralto-to-baritone is not a pretty sound but I'm not being paid to sing.

Yma, I remember hearing some of her offerings on public radio...wow. Nuff said.
